The Diablo Summit Trail Run
1/2 Marathon, 10K & 5K

Near the starting line looking up towards Mt. Diablo’s summit.

In this race, all the hard work comes in the first half–climbing to the top, followed by a marvelous, effortless, freewheeling descent to the finish. Assuredly, your return split will be a whole lot faster!

From the start/finish on Mitchell Canyon Road, near the Interpretive Center, the out-and-back course steadily climbs via rugged, twisting single-track trails from the base at 600 ft to the summit at over 3,700 ft.

Course map Profile

The Diablo Summit Trail Run is adventure running at its finest. The view from the top of Mt. Diablo is second only to Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro in total visible land area. On a clear day, you can see the mouth of Yosemite Valley, 90 miles to the east, and Mt. Whitney in the still more distant snow-capped Sierras beyond.

Looking west, your gaze will search past the Golden Gate to the Farallon Islands in the blue Pacific. Or, look south to the Santa Cruz Mountains, southeast to Mount Hamilton, or north — unbelievably — to Mount Lassen, towering high above the clouds. Running these trails, you’ll see 35 of California’s 58 counties, a staggering two-thirds of the state, encompassing over 40,000 square miles.

You'll run along rolling hills towards the summit.

The run starts gently on wide dirt trails up Mitchell Canyon to Deer Flat, where the route begins a twisting, turning ascent into more and more open terrain and increasingly better views. Just past Juniper Campground, the 1/2 marathon meets Juniper Trail, the final, gnarly leg to the summit. At the top of Mt Diablo, the views might leave you even more breathless than the climb.

If you’re entered in the 5K or 10K, you’ll follow the same route, but turn around sooner.
