perfectly situated staging area for visits to the many nearby wineries. If you enjoy good food, you’ll rejoice in the vicinity’s three superb restaurants: Mustard’s, Bix’s, and Greystone’s (run by the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America).

Most of the park is rugged. The terrain and trail surface resemble Huddart Park on the Peninsula, or Mt. Tamalpais in Marin. Napa Valley evokes California’s famous Wine Country—its picturesque rolling hills adorned by grape vineyards, its valleys bright with yellow mustard in the spring. The 10K features roughly 750 feet of climbing, while the 1/2 marathon, essentially a double 10K loop, has about 1600 feet of uphills.

Extra fun: don’t wear spotless new running attire—Calistoga’s famous mud baths are close by, and you’re sure to get a fair sample during the race. Also, expect multiple stream crossings— although most are only puddle-deep, two are sure to wet your shins. But you won’t go home dirty—the park has picnic tables and baths, and your race fee includes a liberal supply of quarters for a hot post-race shower.
